Rugs of Turkey
The Ghiordes knot was used for all the other early Turkish rugs, and they were made entirely of wool—warp, weft, and pile. Outstanding among them were the Oushak rugs with their large elaborate medallions and rich colors.
They are the ancestors of the big red and blue or red and green "Turkey carpets" that were the pride and joy of well-to-do nineteenth
century matrons.
A few early prayer rugs remain, most of them in Italian
churches.
Some outstanding examples of these three types are in private
collections and museums.
